For 2019, Washington ranked as the third least energy-expensive state, according to a recent WalletHub study.

For a better understanding of Americans’ energy costs relative to their location and consumption habits, the personal finance website compared the average monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia using a formula that accounts for several residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

According to the study, Washington ranked No. 49, making it the third least energy-expensive state with an estimated average total monthly energy cost of $265.

Additional findings include:

  • Washington ranked among the five states with the lowest electricity price;
  • Washington ranked among the five states with the highest motor-fuel price; and
  • Washington ranked among the five states with the lowest motor-fuel consumption per driver.
