Olympia Veterinarian Wins Vet of the Year Award

The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association held its Pacific Northwest Veterinary Conference in Tacoma earlier this fall.

Several veterinarians, staff, and others were honored with awards during the event.

The 2018 Veterinarian of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Victoria L. Smith, of Steamboat Animal Hospital in Olympia. Dr. Smith also is an Army Reserves Veterinary Officer at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and an animal cruelty investigator, according to WSVMA.

“Dr. Smith is an exceptional veterinary professional and a hero to many with her unparalleled leadership qualities and passion for helping others,” WSVMA said in a statement. “A Major in the 149th Medical Detachment Veterinary Services at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Dr. Smith deploys worldwide to provide veterinary care to communities in remote geographical areas and was recognized with the Army Commendation Medal for her meritorious service.”

The 2018 Humane Animal Welfare Award went to Sally Halela from South County Cats in Maple Valley.

Doug Hoge, the territory manager for Henry Schein Animal Health in Vancouver, Washington, was presented with the 2018 Allied Industry Partner Award.
